Review: Petzl Myo 3 Halogen/LED Headlamp

Name: Eric "Oppie" Oppegaard
Gender: Male
Weight: 198lbs (90kg)
Height: 6'4'' (1.95 meters)
Location: Madison, Connecticut, United States of America
E-Mail: eoppegaard-crsoWEOekADQT0dZR+***@public.gmane.org
Experience:
My camping and mountaineering began when I was younger in the Boy
Scouts. I went on one to two outings a month that included long
distance backpacking, as well as cold weather camping. I also have
gone on multiple spelunking (caving) trips in New Hampshire, Upstate
New York, and Massachusetts. I am an avid mountain biker, going out
almost daily, including during the winter months to local areas. I
will go backpacking monthly. I have summitted Mt. Washington five
times, two of which during winter months, hiked the Presidential
Range, as well as multiple mountains in New Hampshire, New York,
Vermont, and Connecticut. I am a registered Emergency Medical
Technician and a firefighter in my Volunteer Fire/Rescue Company. I
have certification as a Hazardous Materials Technician, as well as
Technical Search/Rescue. I am also an FCC Certified Amateur Radio
Operator (KB1JNW) and carry a handheld tri-band radio on my excursions.

Manufacturer:
Petzl
http://www.petzl.com
Year Model: 2003
Weight (advertised):
4.8 oz / 137 g -- headlamp only
8.3 oz / 237 g -- including batteries
Weight (actual):
4.75 / 135 g -- headlamp only
8.25 oz / 234 g -- including batteries
Suggested Retail: $45.00 (US)

Test Length: 10 Months
Area Tested: Mt. Washington, Wet/Winter Conditions, Mt. Philo Vermont,
Wet/Winter Conditions/

I have used this headlamp on multiple cold and warm weather trips. I
have been quite pleased with it overall. The headlamp has combined
LED as well as Halogen illumination. The power to the two lamps is
controlled via twisting the outer reflector assembly. The unit also
has a locking mechanism when the adjustable vertical tilt of the lamp
is all the way up, or in the horizontal position, which prevents the
unit from being turned on. As mentioned, the lamp as a vertical tilt
that will lock into the desired range through a series of light
clicks, common with most Petzl Products. The outer headband is made
of yellow and blue elastic, which is quite comfortable to wear. I
found that I could adjust the unit to fit comfortably either on my
bare head, or over a winter hat if needed. The straps need to be
adjusted with bare hands. I found it difficult to tighten the straps
with gloves on. Battery Power for the unit is provided by four AA
style batteries in the classic Petzl battery case, located on the back
of the unit. Power is routed via a small black cable, similar to
CAT-5 Phone Wire, to the lamp assembly. I found that smearing a small
amount of silicone around the battery door allowed for easier cold
weather changing of the batteries, as well as prevented the rubber
gasket from drying out or freezing in place.

Pros: LED and Halogen combined. LED's use less power offering longer
battery length. Elastic Strap, very comfortable. Water Resistance.

Cons: Strap hard to adjust in cold weather conditions.

Bottom Line: Another Quality Petzl Product, not as bright LED as the
Myo 5, however definitely throws enough light to get the job done!

Review: Petzl Myo 3 Halogen/LED Headlamp
Hi Eric O,

Thanks for your Owner's Review. It has been added to the Owner
Review Queue and will be picked up by an Edit Moderator soon. Do not
worry if nothing happens with it for a few days. All our Editors are
volunteers and your report will be subject to an official edit within
fourteen days. If you have not had a response from an Edit Moderator
via the Yahoo Groups list within this timeframe, please let me know
directly at jdeben-***@public.gmane.org

To assist in this process, if this is your first Owner Review we ask
that you post only ONE Owner Review for edit at a time. Our
experience is that it is more efficient for both the Editors and
yourself, if you post your first review, have it edited, approved and
uploaded before you post your second and subsequent reviews. This
way we can work with you on addressing any standard BGT policy edits
which you can incorporate into your second and subsequent reviews
before submission.

If you are new to BackpackGearTest.org, welcome to the community!
The Editors will work with you, within their own time constraints, to
get your first two Owner Reviews approved and upload in a timely
manner. Once these first two Owner Reviews have been approved and
you have submitted your Tester Agreement you will be eligible to
start applying for Tests.

You may receive edits or comments from other members of the group.
These edits and comments, while not official, should be considered
carefully, and if you find them substantial, revise and re-post your
review. Incorporating member edits and re-submitting to the list will
usually result in a better review, as well as making things easier
for the official Editor. Please put REVISED in the subject line of
your re-submitted review, if you take this route or make any changes
to your review BEFORE the review has been taken by an Edit Moderator.

Additionally, it is important for you to monitor the Yahoo Groups
list to keep track of the progress of your Owner Review. Once an
Editor has taken your OR and made the necessary edits they will post
their comments to the list with EDIT in the subject line. Once you
have incorporated these edits into your review please use REPOST in
the subject line. When your OR has been approved by the Editor they
will use APPROVED in the subject line.

If you'd like to keep track of the progress of your OR, the entire
Owner Review Queue is posted to the list on Fridays.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask via
the list or contact me directly.

Regards
Jamie DeBenedetto
Edit Administration Officer

Hi Eric,
Nice start here of a quality review. I've made some edits that you
need to address as well as posed some questions/suggestions that would
add significantly to the usefulness of the review. Once you've had a
chance to make the edits & additions, please repost it to the list
with REPOST in the subject. I'll pick it up for another review before
providing the info you need to upload it to BGT.

If you would like some additional direct assistance before reposting,
just post a message to Stephanie asking for a mentor to be assigned. A
seasoned BGT veteran will give you a hand in crafting the review and
identifying the kind of information we're looking for in the reviews.
You can also take a read through several of the headlamp & flashlight
test reports we've recently completed for manufacturers - just do a
search on Petzl, or headlamp, or LED on BGT.

Thanks again for the good work.

### "1.95 m" - Be consistent in terms of spelling out the units or
not. In this case since you abbreviate everywhere else, you should
here as well.

### Nice recap of you & your history but a little long for what we
need to provide a quick snapshot of your background & camping style.
We find that about 100 words is generally enough to get the relevant
info across. Please rewrite.

### So this has a separate battery pack that's not integrated with the
lamp like the Petzl Tikka? Where is it worn? How big is it? Is it
awkward? Does the wire get caught on things? How has the wire stood up
to abuse? What happens if it breaks? Is it field repairable?

### How easy is it to change the batteries with gloves? How long do
batteries last for LED only? How about Halogen only? How about your
normal mix of use?

### How bright is it? How bright is the LED vs the halogen bulb? How
useful is the LED? How many LED bulbs are there? Is there any variable
power settings available (e.g. high/med/low)? Can you use the LED for
hiking at night or do you need the halogen to light the trail
sufficiently? Is the LED only useful for close work in camp? Have you
seen any issues with the elastic headband loosening up over time? Is
it getting less "stretchy"? What's the effect of cold on battery life?
How easy is it to replace the halogen bulb? With gloves? Can you
replace the halogen bulb while the LED is on so you can see to do it
at night? How crack/break resistant is the lens? Have you had any lens
failures? These are some of the kinds of features/performance issues
that make a difference to a backpacker and would be helpful in your
review.
