Experience:
My camping and mountaineering began when I was younger in the Boy
Scouts. I went on one to two outings a month that included long
distance backpacking, as well as cold weather camping. I also have
gone on multiple spelunking (caving) trips in New Hampshire, Upstate
New York, and Massachusetts. I am an avid mountain biker, going out
almost daily, including during the winter months to local areas. I
will go backpacking monthly. I have summitted Mt. Washington five
times, two of which during winter months, hiked the Presidential
Range, as well as multiple mountains in New Hampshire, New York,
Vermont, and Connecticut. I am a registered Emergency Medical
Technician and a firefighter in my Volunteer Fire/Rescue Company. I
have certification as a Hazardous Materials Technician, as well as
Technical Search/Rescue. I am also an FCC Certified Amateur Radio
Operator (KB1JNW) and carry a handheld tri-band radio on my excursions.

I have used this headlamp on multiple cold and warm weather trips. I
have been quite pleased with it overall. The headlamp has combined
LED as well as Halogen illumination. The power to the two lamps is
controlled via twisting the outer reflector assembly. The unit also
has a locking mechanism when the adjustable vertical tilt of the lamp
is all the way up, or in the horizontal position, which prevents the
unit from being turned on. As mentioned, the lamp as a vertical tilt
that will lock into the desired range through a series of light
clicks, common with most Petzl Products. The outer headband is made
of yellow and blue elastic, which is quite comfortable to wear. I
found that I could adjust the unit to fit comfortably either on my
bare head, or over a winter hat if needed. The straps need to be
adjusted with bare hands. I found it difficult to tighten the straps
with gloves on. Battery Power for the unit is provided by four AA
style batteries in the classic Petzl battery case, located on the back
of the unit. Power is routed via a small black cable, similar to
CAT-5 Phone Wire, to the lamp assembly. I found that smearing a small
amount of silicone around the battery door allowed for easier cold
weather changing of the batteries, as well as prevented the rubber
gasket from drying out or freezing in place.
Pros: LED and Halogen combined. LED's use less power offering longer
battery length. Elastic Strap, very comfortable. Water Resistance.
Cons: Strap hard to adjust in cold weather conditions.
Bottom Line: Another Quality Petzl Product, not as bright LED as the
Myo 5, however definitely throws enough light to get the job done!
